Hi, we're planning a visit to Lake Malaren this summer and would appreciate any info you can offer re transportation. Important questions: (1) Is there any kind of ferry service or bus/train service that links the towns together? (2) Is the lake water warm enough for children to swim in in late June or early July? (3) Is it possible to rent a house (we have 4 adults, 2 children)? We've tried AirB&B and cannot find many options? Is there a good website to use to find accommodations (other than a hotel).
A:
(1) Yes, ferry service runs but check to make sure it connects the points you want (2) Not really, the water is cold (Northern Europe is like that) but locals and other Northern …

Lake Mälaren is part of Stockholm but parts of the lake are far from Stockholm such as the Krusenberg Herrgård housing which is closer to Uppsala than to Stockholm (aprox. 1 hour by car). I stayed at this property during september and the weather was warm enough to enjoy a swedish sauna at 10 p.m. including a short swimbath on the lake accompanied by the moon light! During winter time I was said that this part of the lake remains frozen.

A few 100 meters from the Stockholm central station you will find the Malar lake. It reaches inland for about 75 miles and one can go by steamer to the kings palace at Drottningholm , a short but interesting trip or to Mariefred, a medieval town of historical interest with some good restaurants. That will take some hours and you are still not halfway to the end of the lake. There are many other interesting places along the shores as the town of Strängnäs and som ancient buildings. The lake features a unique archipelago and sometimes you feel like navigating a river because of the narrow passes. These places ar also accessible from landside if you go by car. Ask your tourist agency and enjoy the secret beauty of lake Malar once known for malaria decease but since long free of it.
