The government argues Chrome gives Google an unfair edge by directing users to Google Search by default. With around 66 percent of the global web browser market share, Chrome is tightly integrated with Google’s search engine, reinforcing the company’s dominance. Already, AI rival OpenAI has expressed interest in buying Chrome.

An OpenAI executive confirmed that it would buy Chrome if Google were forced to sell the browser. But it has interesting plans for the app.

As the federal government and Google work through potential remedies for the company’s illegal monopoly over online search, OpenAI is interested in purchasing the Chrome browser, should the court order it be sold off to loosen Google’s grip on the market.
