Inflation in the U.K. unexpectedly fell in December, a move that will likely fuel pressure on the Bank of England to cut interest rates again next month and give the U.K. government some breathing room following recent turbulence in financial markets.

British inflation unexpectedly slowed to an annual rate of 2.5% in December from 2.6% in November, official figures showed on Wednesday.

UK inflation fell last month but remains above the Bank of England's target. Prices rose 2.5% in the year to December, down from 2.6% the month before, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said. The latest figures come after pressure has increased on the public finances in recent days due to government borrowing costs hitting their highest level for several years.

The dollar fell to a one-week low as investors turned cautious ahead of U.S. inflation data later. U.S. inflation is expected to accelerate to 2.9% year over year in December but core inflation is seen unchanged at 3.

The Indian rupee is likely to open marginally higher on Wednesday as the dollar retreats in the lead up to U.S. inflation data that will give cues on the direction of U.S. interest rates. The 1-month non-deliverable forward indicated that the rupee will open at 86.

On Wednesday, a strong dollar rally slowed down as traders were a little more cautious. They awaited a crucial U.S. consumer inflation report that was expected later in the day, keeping investors from making their big moves.
