A tornado touched down in Northern California's Tehama County on Friday, weather officials confirmed. According to the National Weather Service, a tornado accompanied by quarter-sized hail was spotted around 5:18 p.

The National Weather Service issued the warning for northern Tehema County and southern central Shasta County, but it expired at 6 p.m. The agency then issued a special weather statement cautioning residents in Shingletown, Lyonsville, Paynes Creek and Manton about a strong thunderstorm that would impact the areas through 7 p.m.

A warning covering an area with about 2,200 residents told people to take shelter because flying debris was expected.

A strong thunderstorm birthed a rare tornado on Friday evening near Paynes Creek in Tehama County, close to the Shasta County border in Northern California, according to meteorologists.

According to the NWS, a possible tornado was located near Paynes Creek, south of Shingletown. As of Friday evening, it was unclear if the funnel reached the ground. By 8:30 p.m., there had been no reports of any damage. The NWS will work with the Tehama County Sheriff's Office to continue to look for any damage in the area.
