In a district demolished a century ago in the Tulsa Race Massacre and rebuilt from the rubble, state Rep. Monroe Nichols declared victory as the first Black Tulsan elected as the city’s mayor.

Tulsa mayor-elect Monroe Nichols has made history as the first Black person elected ever in the city. The results came Tuesday night in the general election. Unofficial results from the State Election Board show Nichols beat out challenger Karen Keith by more than 13,

Monroe will also be Tulsa's first Black mayor. He gave his acceptance speech in front of images of Black Wall Street in the days before the Tulsa Race Massacre.
