New York Mets legend Darryl Strawberry routinely campaigned for the club to hold onto star first baseman Pete Alonso for as long as possible even though Alonso was on track to surpass Strawberry as the Mets' all-time leader in career home runs.

Alonso has 226 homers through six seasonsm and if he plays nine more seasons he'll need to average about 31 per year to get there.

The New York Mets have high expectations this season. After a run to the NLCS last year, they added Juan Soto to a stellar lineup that should compete for the pennant. Last year, the Mets started the playoffs by beating the Milwaukee Brewers on Pete Alonso’s game-winning homer off of Devin Williams.
