Authorities across the United States are investigating after racist text messages – some with references to “slave catchers” and “picking cotton” – have been received by children, college students and working professionals from unrecognized phone numbers in the wake of the presidential election.

Black people from states including Maryland, New Jersey, Florida, Alabama, Michigan, Georgia, Nevada, New York, and South Carolina detail incidents where they received racist messages,

"Congratulations! you have been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation," reads one version of the messages. "Please be prepared to leave your home November 24, 2024 you will be picked up at 8am sharp in our white van. Also you will sit with Group C Have a nice day. Sincerely, A TRUMP SUPPORTER."
