While Tesla is on the verge of starting a new chapter, Alphabet’s Waymo has been quietly providing actual paid robotaxi rides to customers in San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Austin, where Tesla’s test will begin.

A new analysis done by ride-hailing aggregator Obi shows Waymos cost more especially on shorter trips. They also have longer wait times.

Waymo rides are 30% to 40% more expensive on average than Uber and Lyft on the same routes, according to a recent report by rideshare data analytics firm Obi. The firm analyzed more than 700 ride options across the three apps over the course of a month and found that Waymo’s prices averaged $18.

The self-driving taxi company also said its vehicles were in the wrong place at the wrong time in Los Angeles after protesters set fire to several of the cars there.

Waymo's autonomous vehicles have become part of the everyday landscape in a growing number of US cities, serving as safe transport options, tourist attractions, and symbols of a not-so-distant future. Their market dominance, however, is far from guaranteed.
