The National Weather Service said on Jan. 3, 2018, parts of north Florida, along with south Georgia, saw snow accumulate thanks to the first winter storm the Sunshine State had seen since 1989. Georgia of course saw the largest accumulations, up to 2 inches, but the snowfall in Florida was still measurable.

Snow in the Sunshine State doesn't happen very often. But it did. And here are the photos from Pensacola to Yulee to prove it.

Multiple parts of Florida are seeing snow as a winter storm makes its way across the Gulf Coast. On Monday, Jan. 20, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency ahead of dangerously cold wind chills and prolonged freezing and sub-freezing temperatures.

Parts of the Florida Panhandle were coated in a blanket of snow with temperatures at 25 degrees on Tuesday while Miami had temperatures in the 80s, seemingly two different worlds. From Pensacola down to Miami, there was a difference of 55 degrees, according to the National Weather Service Miami .

Florida residents in four locations woke to very chilly temps. It was 25 in Tallahassee at 6 a.m. By comparison, it was 41 in Anchorage, Alaska.

Turtles can lose their ability to swim in cold temperatures and may be seen “floating listlessly in the water or near shore,” according to the FWC. “Keep in mind that cold-stunned turtles can appear to be dead but often are still alive.”

Officials are asking Panhandle residents to avoid being on the roads. Freezing temperatures mean icy, dangerous conditions.

“I’m so glad I’m so much farther south. I moved to Florida to get away from the snow!” commented Jennifer Saxon Halam on his post. According to her Facebook, she lives in Englewood on Florida’s west coast about 88 miles south of Tampa. But just wait: Weather Underground forecasts a low of 38 there next Saturday morning.
