Steve Wilks, who ran the Niners' defense in 2023 and was head coach of the Cardinals in 2018, has agreed to become the Jets' defensive coordinator, sources told ESPN.

Former Carolina Panthers coach Steve Wilks is landing in "The Big Apple." As first reported by NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero this evening, Wilks is set to be hired as the new defensive coordinator of the New York Jets.

Steve Wilks has agreed to terms to be the New York Jets' defensive coordinator under new head coach Aaron Glenn, multiple media outlets reported Wednesday night.

Glenn, who was the Lions' defensive coordinator the past four seasons, said he would not be calling the defense for the Jets. Wilks has done the job and has head coaching experience.

Glenn was hired as the next head coach of the Jets earlier this month after a four-year run as the Detroit Lions’ defensive coordinator. The Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh in the middle of last season. Glenn said earlier this week that he will not call defensive plays, so that will presumably fall to Wilks.
