The Associated Press has called the Alabama District 2 Congressional election for Shomari Figures (D). Caroleene Dobson (R) took the stage and gave a speech late Tuesday night at her party at Fort Whiting in Mobile.

At least three Alabama sites were experiencing problems with voting Tuesday morning, election officials and a civil rights organization said.

Shomari Figures will become the first Black person to hold the seat in Alabama after it was created after a Supreme Court battle.

With Figures’ win, Democrats pick up a seat in the closely divided U.S. House. It also means that Alabama’s congressional delegation of seven representatives will include two Democrats and five Republicans.

Democrat Shomari Figures won election to a U.S. House seat representing Alabama on Thursday. Republican Rep. Barry Moore, who currently represents the district, is running in the neighboring 1st District after a federal court ordered Alabama to draw a new congressional district that ensured Black residents’ voting power.

Voters in Alabama will head to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots in national, state and local races.

Democrats will pick up a much needed seat on their quest to take back control of the U.S. House, and it’s in Alabama.
