Three American citizens (two of them Utahns) who were sentenced to death over a failed coup attempt in Congo have had their sentences commuted to life imprisonment.

Congo's President Felix Tshisekedi has commuted the death sentences of three Americans convicted on charges of participating in a botched coup attempt in the country's capital Kinshasa last year, an official said Wednesday.

Three Americans convicted for their role in a failed coup in Democratic Republic of Congo last year have had their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment, the presidency has said. They were among 37 people sentenced to death last September by a military court.
