Johnson won 83 NASCAR races and a record-equaling seven season championships during 19 seasons as a full-time NASCAR driver. Since he last competed as a regular in 2020, Johnson spent two seasons driving on the IndyCar tour before becoming part of the Legacy Motor Club ownership team in 2023.

Legacy this season will field two full-time cars, the No. 43 Toyota for Erik Jones — two top-fives in two seasons with the team and a finish of 28th in the Cup Series standings — and the No. 42 Toyota for John Hunter Nemechek. Neither driver made the playoffs.

The story of Legacy Motor Club was formed in 2023 when Johnson teamed up with Maury Gallagher and Richard Petty as co-owners. The team evolved from Petty GMS Motorsports, which has its origins in Petty Enterprises, one of NASCAR's oldest and most successful teams. While Johnson now takes the lead, Richard Petty remains involved as an ambassador.
