President Donald Trump on Monday directed a U.S. national security panel to take a fresh look at Nippon Steel's bid for U.S. Steel to help determine if "further action" is appropriate, raising hopes that the deal could gain an elusive green light.

The White House said the review is meant to assist the president in determining whether further action would be appropriate.
