In a swift and unanimous vote, the County Board of Supervisors has agreed to a special election to fill the vacancy left behind by Nora Vargas.

The seat became vacant earlier this month after Chair Nora Vargas' surprise announcement that she would step down and not serve a second term, despite winning reelection in November.

Paul Canepa and Sonny Dhaliwal were chosen as the new chair and vice chair of the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors as new members were sworn in.

Late last month, following a resounding reelection victory, Nora Vargas said she would resign on Jan. 6 — the date her first term ended.
