Attorneys general in Democratic Party–led states across the country announce they are gearing up for a legal fight.

Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Rob Bonta announced Thursday that they were readying to "protect California values" against the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump.

California Governor Gavin Newsom called a special legislative session aimed at shielding the state’s policies on issues including reproductive rights, climate and immigration from potential threats under a Trump administration.

Once one of the president-elect's most visible critics during his first term, Newsom announced a special session of the California legislature ahead of Trump’s inauguration. Newsom said the session would focus on shoring up protections for women, LGBTQ+ people and immigrants before Trump takes office.

California's governor and attorney general are taking immediate steps to once again take up the mantle as leader of the Trump resistance.

Newsom, a staunch Trump opponent, asked for the special session to convene before the new year, with immigration, climate change, and abortion on the agenda.

His announcement called on the Legislature to give the attorney general’s office more funding to fight federal challenges when they meet in December.
