Two rare celestial spectacles will coincide this weekend as the last supermoon of the year rises in the night sky just as the Leonid meteor shower begins to reach its peak. The full moon on 15 November,

The event produces some of the year’s fastest meteors, although the nearly full moon may make them challenging to spot.

One of the most significant annual meteor showers, the Leonids originate with Comet Tempel-Tuttle, according to Royal Museums Greenwich. So-called “shooting stars” appear when Earth cruises through the old debris field from the comet, both celestial objects orbiting the sun on annually crossing paths.
