The United States government is formally designating eight Latin American organized crime groups that also operate in the U_S_ to be “foreign terrorist organizations.”

Six of the groups are in Mexico, which means the Trump administration move could have serious implications for businesses — and people — on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border.

The U.S. State Department is moving to designate Tren de Aragua, Sinaloa Cartel and six other Latin American drug cartels and gangs as foreign terrorist organizations, according to an unpublished notice in the Federal Register posted Wednesday.
