At a time when eggs are already in short supply and egg farmers are struggling to keep their flocks alive, unknown thieves have stolen thousands of eggs.

About $40,000 worth of eggs were taken from a trailer belonging to Pete and Gerry’s Organics, police said. U.S. wholesale egg prices are at a record high.

About 100,000 organic eggs were reportedly stolen from Pete and Gerry's Organics in Greencastle this past weekend.

Local law enforcement say the heist could be linked to the sky-high cost of eggs — an issue which has been plaguing the U.S. in the midst of an avian flu outbreak.
