The winner of the Alabama Arbor Day Poster Contest got a chance to plant a tree with Gov. Kay Ivey at the capitol Tuesday.
Vivian Malone and James Hood walked through the doors of Foster Auditorium at The University of Alabama to become the first Black students to successfully enroll at the school in 1963.
She was attacked by mounted police officers on "Bloody Sunday" in Selma. Her efforts, along with "Bloody Sunday," were significant in the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
