Alex Ovechkin scored the first playoff overtime goal of his NHL career to give the Washington Capitals a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series on Monday night.

Capitals star Alex Ovechkin reached hockey immortality by breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time scoring record (895 goals) earlier this month, and finished the regular season 897 career goals. Winning the Stanley Cup would put a huge bow on the left wing's historic season.

Ovechkin scored two goals, assisted on another and generally acted as the tone-setter in Washington's 3-2 overtime win over Montreal.
