Jews around the world are marking the start of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, which celebrates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in the second century B.C. after it was defiled by Syrian Greeks.

Hanukkah, or the festival of lights, is an eight-day Jewish festival. This year, it starts on the same day as Christmas.

The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah may not receive quite the same level of attention as Christmas. But as Adam Sandler pointed out in his hit “Hanukkah Song,” the holiday, which starts this year on Wednesday evening, does offer children one advantage: “Instead of one day of presents, we have eight crazy nights.”

It’s an “oy to the world” moment. It’s a mashup of Christmas and the first night of Hanukkah. It happens about once every 20 years, and this year, it happened. There’s even a nickname for this day “Chrismukkah.

The first night of Hanukkah this year begins Dec. 25, coinciding with Christmas Day for the first time since 2005. It’s the fifth time the two days have aligned since 1910.

The Chabad of Merrick-Bellmore-Wantagh will host its 19th annual Hanukkah Experience with its grand menorah lighting and parade, followed by a traditional meal, movies and crafts for children. The event begins at the Merrick Long Island Rail Road station and features performances by local students

On eight consecutive nightfalls, Jews gather with family and friends to light one additional candle in the menorah — a multi-branched candelabra.
