An earthquake shook parts of West Texas Friday afternoon with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8, according to the United States Geological Survey. The earthquake was recorded about 16 miles southwest of Ackerly,

Several areas around Midland reported feeling the earthquake, as did some parts of Southern New Mexico, including Roswell, Carlsbad and Alamogordo. The earthquake happened at 12:33 MT/1:33 CT, on Friday, Feb. 28, about 16 miles southwest of Ackerly, Texas, according to the United States Geological Survey.

At 1:33 p.m., a 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit southwest of Ackerly. USGS said it was 4.2 miles in depth. A second earthquake with a magnitude of 2.6 was located south, southeast of Ackerly. This occurred at 3:47 p.m. and was 2.6 miles in depth, USGS reports.

First Alert 7 received several phone calls from people in Big Spring and Midland saying they felt the earthquake.
