Oct 8, 2021 · After the defeat, the Norwegian Government-in-exile started building several Norwegian army, navy and air force units from the United Kingdom. Around 10,000 people lost their lives on Norwegian soil during World War II, most of them during of the liberation of Northern Norway in the autumn of 1944.

We provide for Norway's national security. We also contribute to global peace and security through our participation in UN and NATO missions worldwide. The Armed Forces are divided into the Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the Home Guard.

Sep 29, 2021 · The Coast Guard and the Royal Norwegian Navy maintain Norwegian sovereignty at sea. With its frigates, submarines and corvettes, the Navy prevents unauthorised access to Norwegian territory. The Coast Guard patrols our coast and conducts fisheries control and other supervision missions.

Oct 30, 2024 · Our mission is to safeguard Norwegian sovereignty and sovereign rights in Norwegian waters and zones. We are also tasked to handle customs and environmental supervision at sea, SAR-operations and docking control.

In the Army and the Air Force, the officers follow the traditional military ranks from Second Lieutenant to General. In the Navy, the ranks go from Sub Lieutenant to Admiral. The Norwegian officer ranks correspond to NATO's rank system (OF1–9).
